PARENT COUNCIL SURVEY

Acton strongly believes in the power of peer mentoring. In the spirit of Acton, we would like to provide more support to our families and learners. We feel that many seasoned Acton parents are ready to provide families with greater support as they onboard and learn the ways of Acton. We envision a Parent Council to meet twice a year and support new parent orientation, family onboarding, and to be a resource for any parent throughout the year.

6. SCENARIO

A first year parent named Susan has a 5 year old boy named Jake. When asked about what he did each day Jake often shares “nothing” or “I don’t know” and shrugs. The times when he does share he tells Susan that other learners are distracting and are often chit-chatting. Jake has made slow progress on his badge plan and when asked about his goals Jake tells his Mom that he likes working with easy materials. Susan is worried and feels like Jake may fall behind his peers. She thinks he needs to be pushed by Guides and have more direct instructional support. Susan blames the Guides for not paying enough attention to Jake and she is thinking that Acton just isn’t the right fit. If you were on the Parent Council what would be your process to support her?
