My KING!

The world of Acton Chesslandia is a place of storytelling, concentration, and fun. As we began our chess quest we learned all about the KING. The King moves one square at a time and can move in any direction. We recalled the stories of our two kings, the white king, King Chomper, was passionate about food and the black king, King Shaky, was passionate about jewels. Their crowns were designed and decorated with what they loved and perfectly reflected who they are. So, we asked learners some important questions and set them off on their mini king quest.

If you were a king, what would you be passionate about? What would make you venture out onto the Chesslandia chess board? How would your crown reflect who you are and what you care about?

Off they went! Some learners took time to weigh their options, list their interests, other learners had instant ideas and began the creative process of designing their crown right away without much premeditation. As you could imagine, it was beautiful and hilarious to hear the elaborate stories of our Acton kings.

“I am the King of Dogs because I love dogs and I’m really getting the hang of them.” “I am the King of Cold because I love snow and ice.” “I am the King of Gold because I love shiny things and glitter.” “I am the King of Magic and I help the unicorns.” Plus, more kings of snakes, kittens, worms, donuts, stars and space, and I myself am the Sleepy King, every time I move I fall asleep and wake up to smell my passion, coffee!

After creating our King crowns learners seemed a bit more confidant and ready to take on our chess challenge. We played human chess on our life size chess board and the diversity of passions and decoration filled the school with so much life and love.

There is a King in all of us, we all need to find that light of passion that drives us to get out on to life’s chessboard. What drives you, what do you care about, how do we see your light?
